John Carter was born on March 24, 1922 to Robert Nelson Carter and Charlotte Hunter in Brampton, Ontario. He attended Brampton High School.

John enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in July 1942 where he served as an Air Bombardier with the 428 “Ghost” Squadron and was stationed at Malton and Montreal. He went overseas in May 1944. He may have started flying Handley Page Hailfax II bombers, but mostly would have flown in Avro Lancaster X.

The Air Force Casualties report in the February 15, 1945 issue of the Globe and Mail lists CARTER, John Hunter under Died of Injuries on Active Service on January 28, 1945. According to a letter found in his personal effects, John had just come back from a week’s leave in London before returning to RAF Middleton, St George, Durham, England (No 64 Base) where he was staying in room 13.

He was reburied on July 30, 1947 in the Hamburg British Cemetery in Ohlsdorf, Germany in Plot 10, Row E, Grave No. 12. His Headstone has the lines He loved your stars, He learned them all by name, For use in one last journey, under a cross.

He is also remembered on the Carter family’s gravestone in the Brampton Cemetery.
