Herbert Elgin Mitchell was born on March 2, 1912 at 7:00pm, in Brampton, Ontario to Samuel Herbert Mitchell and Ida Wilhelmina James also of Brampton. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a B Com.

The Brampton Book of Remembrance says Herbert enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1940. He was attached to Squadron No. 406 RAF. He served in Canada, Britain, Malta, and North Africa. His Ontario Registration of Death has his last permanent address as 178 Johnston Street, Kingston, Ontario. His cause of death shows he was killed during air operations on the North African front.

He joined RCAF on June 2, 1940, and was promoted to F / O on October 5, 1940, and then to F / L on July 1, 1942. He was sent to Great Britain and redirected to Africa North where he was posted to Squadron 89 in November 1941 with Sgt JG Trebell as Operator Radar. The two men are seconded to Malta and won 4 wins in the space of 6 months. On the night of December 21-22, 1942, they crashed near Morris and were both killed. At that time, Trebell was promoted F / S. Mitchell, 31, is buried in the cemetery of Bone, Algeria.

He is buried in the Bone War Cemetery in Annaba, Algeria Section VIII, Row G, Grave 1-13.
